Self-Service Checkout Programme for Tesco

The Challenge

As part of a wider front of store transformation, Tesco set out to replace traditional main bank checkouts with additional Self-Service Checkout (SCO) solutions across 106 stores. The goal was to modernise the checkout experience, improve customer flow and increase operational efficiency – all within tight night-time working windows and without disrupting the wider store environment.

Our Approach

SJH brought structure and predictability to a fast-moving national programme. We carried out detailed pre-start planning, created clear removal and installation sequences and issued shared POWs across all parties.

Night-time working and CDM-managed delivery required tight coordination with signage teams, fixture manufacturers and data/electrical contractors to keep the programme moving safely and efficiently. Our focus remained simple: keep every store on track, maintain quality and give the retailer full confidence in the rollout.

Delivery

The Solution

Structured, predictable rollout:

A consistent sequence across all 106 stores ensured the retailer could plan confidently and maintain operational stability.

Safe night-time delivery:

Working out of hours allowed us to complete all removal, installation and data works without impacting customers or store teams.

Joined-up coordination:

Close collaboration with manufacturers, signage teams and contractors kept every moving part aligned and reduced delays.

Quality and compliance:

All works were delivered to the retailer’s technical, safety and CDM requirements, with full documentation provided at handover.

The Outcome

The rollout of this programme delivered the following results:
A smooth, repeatable national rollout delivered with consistency, clarity and control, supporting Tesco’s ambition to modernise its front-end experience.
